France Confident It Can Tax and Retain Bankers
PARIS — The French government does not fear that taxing bank bonuses will lead traders and financial operations to flee Paris, according to Finance Minister Christine Lagarde.
France will enact a law as early as the end of March levying a 50 percent tax on bonuses above €27,500, or $40,000, regardless of whether they are paid in cash or shares, Ms. Lagarde was quoted as saying by Le Figaro in an interview published Tuesday. The law will affect “about 2,500 bankers,” she said.
